Finding the best solution and product is always a risk but was narrowed down significantly using Solar Water Performance.
Good guidance received from Elmo Olivier from One Energy in Witbank for the best solution to suit my needs for a dual 200 liter option with solar panels preheating into a 200 liter geyser that feeds the heatpump with an additional 200 liter geyser. No cold water and a huge reduction in energy cost.

With constant load-shedding on the back of my mind, I was always interested in changing from my existing electrical geyser to a solar geyser. I did my homework on the best solar geysers, the authorised installers for the rebate programme and the prices of those geysers.
So over the weekend when my decade old geyser burst, I had no choice but to move my plans forward fast. On Monday morning I requested quotes for the replacement of the geyser; Hendrik from One Energy came out to inspect the house and roof on the same morning, I had a quote by early afternoon and the installation was scheduled for the next morning.
When you have a family with small children and no hot water, speed and efficiency is of utmost importance. Hendrik understands the predicament that many people face when a geyser fails, and that a week turn around time between requesting a quote and installing the geyser is not an option. The new solar geyser was installed within 24 hours after I requested the quote.
I take my sincere hat off for small business owners like Hendrik, which understands people's needs. With a quick turn around time, efficient and friendly installation, I managed to minimise the stress of not having hot water.

Works very well. The geyser on the roof requires a long pipe to the bath and so a lot of cold water is lost before the hot water reaches the bath. A retrofit would have been better.

Hassle free service up till now, but can't say anything about the aftercare service because we have only had the system for 2 weeks and only had to use electricity once, when we had overnight visitors and it was overcast.
Temperature is most of the time over 70 degrees with only solar heating and we still are awaiting the eskom rebate, but it is too soon to comment on that as according to supplier that takes at least 5 weeks.

Made the mistake of fitting a 200L kwikot flat panel. Had the panel replaced with no luck as the maximum temperature reached after a week-end away in 30 degree heat was 70 degrees C. It usually only reached about 48 to 52 degrees centigrade.
Currently still sits on the roof disconected. Replaced it with a tasol one with tubes which is easily twice as effective and the geyser has been switched of for more than a month now. Easily reaches 70 degrees C in a day. Wasted a lot of money on the kwikot system with no aftermarket support.

I did install 2 x 300l indirect heating solar geysers at my home at the end of 2013. The quality is good but the real advantage was that I could get not only the Eskom rebate on the system but also an additional rebate from ABSA.
This had a big impact on the cost of the units and brought the repayment period down to about 2 years with only a 25% saving on electricity required.

Aquasolar Review
Heather Brookes
The product is South African made and therefore price wise very reasonable. Aquasolar claims back the Eskom rebate on the customer's behalf so the customer does not have to carry this cost at all.
The overall cost was about R22 623 and we paid R16 225. The geyser is fibre glass. The water has a slight resin smell when one first starts running the hot water. The installation was fantastic. It was led by Geoffrey Carter and done in about 4 hours. He was totally professional and explained everything.
In fact, I have seldom encountered someone as professional as he is. He has done over 200 installations. As the tiles on our house are old and no longer manufactured, we were concerned about damage. They didn't break a single tile and have a method of drilling on the side of the tiles and not through them to put the pipes through.
It was absolutely NOT stressful. They put the panels in exactly the right place and set it up for maximum efficiency. Warranty is ten years on the solar collectors • Five years on the solar geyser • One year on thermostat, Geyserwise Max and element. We like having the geyser wise panel where you can see how hot the water is and control the electrical backup.
Aquasolar was highly recommended by a work colleague and we had the same experience. I would definitely recommend them.

Duratherm Review
Debbie Van der Eems
When we moved into our new house, one of our first priorities was to install a solar geyser to reduce our monthly electricity bill. We allocated a specific amount of money for this.
Because it was important to us to optimally achieve our goal within the allocated budget, we did a lot of research to understand all the options and their costs. This is quite big task, since there are many options such as flat panels, vacuum tubes and heat pumps with each of them having advantages and disadvantages, depending on where you stay.
In this process we consulted the "Solar Water Performance" website. This website provides a lot of valuable information and brings the public into contact with providers of solar solutions. We had valuable discussions with many of these providers and eventually chose a vacuum tube solar geyser from Raymond Beck of Geysersmart in Goodwood.
Vacuum tubes are more efficient during the long cloudy periods in winter in the Western Cape, and since our large family uses sufficient hot water in summer, there is no risk of overheating. The vacuum tubes and the geyser were placed on different sides of the roof for aesthetic reasons and makes use of a pump to circulate the water. The solution includes a Geyserwise controller that shows us what the status of our geyser is in one glance and configure the solution to meet our needs.
From the first full month onwards we experienced a 30% saving in our electricity bill which will give us a return on investment in less than 3 years.
